Which type of roofing is suitable for my project?

Overview of roof types

A solid roof for every purpose

When they hear the word „roof,“ most people first think only of the roof covering their home. Many types of roof are required around the house, however – whether it is the canopy over the front door to the carport, a terrace roof for protection against the sun and rain, or a roof for the garden or tool shed. Whatever the type of roof, there’s always a need for safe and long-lasting protection against storms, wind and weather. That’s why it is all the more important to plan each roof well, and to carefully select the material used for each purpose.

Do-it-yourself brand roofing

The good news? Nowadays, most of the roofs described below can be easily and independently assembled by experienced DIY enthusiasts. This saves time and money, for example, if you are looking to modernize your terrace or finally build a garden house for bicycles, lawn mowers, garden tools and much more. The type of roof and its intended use dictates the building material you should choose.

For example, profile plate and multi-wall sheets are particularly well suited for open roofing. Canopies, carports or terrace roofs are typical projects in this category. If you are planning a closed structure on the other hand, do-it-yourselfers should opt for multi-wall sheets. A significant advantage in this context is the material’s excellent thermal insulation.

Plastics for all types of roofs

The material that you choose will depend on the importance of qualities such as UV resistance, durability, translucency and transparency. For example, plastics such as PVC or PET are cheap to buy, but also age more quickly, making them „blind“ over the long term. If you are designing a decorative terrace roof then, these materials are not suitable.

When it comes to high-quality roofing, polycarbonate multi-wall sheets or profile plates made of sturdy acrylic glass are usually the better option. They also retain their attractive appearance in the long run, ensuring a clear view for years to come, and often feature additional properties such as self-cleaning coating or a „Sunstop“ to protect against overheating.

Planning custom roofs

Do-it-yourselfers planning roofing projects can now determine the right materials and calculate the required quantity with a few clicks of the mouse. It’s easy with our online roof designer!

How does it work? It’s easy: simply enter the dimensions of the planned roof, including the roof pitch. The designer will instantly display the amount of material required. This allows do-it-yourselfers to buy the correct amount of materials the first time and begin assembling the planned roofing right away, without repeat trips to the hardware store. Another tip: When shopping, don’t forget about attachment accessories and – if you don’t have it at home – a suitable tool for cutting and fixing the various types of roofing material.
